My new obsession

My son Cole graduated from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa nearly 2 years ago. I was thrilled that he finished in four years and went on to find gainful employment in Washington DC. For this I am eternally grateful. However, (and this is a big however!) I miss Decorah. To me, it is the very best of America. A town of roughly 9,000 snuggled in to the bluffs of north east Iowa. No easy way to get there, but well worth the trip. A charming downtown, with amazing locally owned shops. Fantastic shoe store, coffee shops, amazing restaurants, a 4 star hotel. A fantastic organic co-op grocery store. I could go on and on. Miles of biking and hiking trails, waterfalls, a fresh trout stream, and a quaint river nestled between Luther and the bluffs. Their Farmers Market was written up in Gourmet magazine as one of the ten best small town markets. Trust me, it is! I made Cole go with me before we checked him in to his freshman dorm!

Funny thing, when we bought a new bus for the Y, it came from Decorah! This town is continuing to touch my life!

But my current obsession is a weird one for me. Watching Eagles sit on their nest (with 3 eggs!!) on a web cam in Decorah. It is fascinating to see one Eagle fly in, and the other fly out. It I s almost like watching paint dry...but trust me, it really is cool. And I am not alone, at one point, there were over 8000 people online today watching.

Cool!

Friday night at The Three Legged Dog

Last night, we had a great evening downtown at The Three Legged Dog. Papa Joe owns "the Dog", and it is named after our dog Harry, who has 3 legs. Papa Joe rescued Harry when he was abandoned and hit by a car. In case you don't know, Harry is number one in Papa Joe's eyes. Who me, jealous??
The Three Legged Dog, is an amazing coffee shop and cafe in downtown, (there is also a great drive through on Morton Avenue). Papa Joe's daughter Beth is the manager.
Back to last night, my sister Millie and her family, and Laura B. And her children joined us for a fun evening...

The above photos are of the interior of the Dog.

The Sorrill brothers

Jake and Nate Sorrill. Absolutely darling. I mean, just look at them!

Nate is on the left, Jake is on the right. These boys love the circus. A love they inherited from their dad. They grew up juggling, riding unicycles and making amazing balloon creatures. In fact, Nate works for the Zoppe Family Circus. The Zoppe Circus is run by the Zoppe family and is, well duh, an Italian family circus. Since July, Nate has worked in their circus's in Arizona, Chicago, Wisconsin, Colorado, and Phoenix. He has great stories of how he has slept in a box truck outfitted with a space heater. When he is in Jacksonville, Nate practices his juggling at the Y. And quite often, Jake joins him. As you can imagine, the Y kids LOVE it!

This summer, they are going to do mini juggling camps at the Y! Yea!

Just look at them, casually juggling...

And look at the juggling balls, hand made, hand sewn...very cool. Who knew?

Nate says the grandmother cooks for them when they are traveling.. He says her Italian food is wonderful. I can only imagine! I want them to come do a circus at the Y! Wishful thinking!

Jake is multi-talented...an amazing photographer and graphic artist. He is also my favorite barrista at The Three Legged Dog! And one more thing, Jake dates my daughter Madeline.

The Sorrill brothers, amazing talent, tucked in our little community. Such fun stories all around us!

My weekday afternoons at the YMCA

In the afternoons, I ride the Y bus, to help out as we pick our After School children up at local grade schools. This is the first year that I have done this, and I am truly enjoying it. I have had fun getting to know the children. Here are some images from today!

Today is the birthday of Dr. Seuss!
And our dear Miss Judy, driving the bus

And I am OBSESSED with my new shoes...

Seriously obsessed
